Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
